The 59th annual Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced, giving the biggest honors (17 nominations) to HBO’s Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. AMC’s Broken Trail just missed the top slot with 16 nominations. After a review of the best comedy, drama, reality, and variety series of the year, a look at the TV movies and mini-series, the die has been cast. Many were nominated, but few will win. Did your favorite show, movie, or mini-series get the nod from the Primetime Emmys? There’s only one way to find out.

The Black Donnellys Gets Bumped Up a Week

Fans of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip are about to see the show bumped off the schedule one week earlier than originally planned. NBC was to premiere the new drama The Black Donnellys in early March, but instead moved the broadcast up a week. The midseason replacement will take over Studio 60‘s Monday night slot at 10:00 p.m. Donnellys is expected to be a hit, partly because its from the team who created the film Crash and partly because its lead-in will be Heroes. Look for The Black Donnellys on Monday, February 26th. NBC has not yet announced when Studio 60 will reappear on the schedule, making fans nervous that it may never return. Studio 60 has not proven to be much of a ratings winner, with only 7 million viewers; 8.58 million if you factor in delayed viewing. Heroes will take a break following the March 5 cliffhanger, and returns in April and May to finish out the season.

At the risk of spoiling part of last night’s episode of Heroes, I felt like talking about it a bit, because this was a pivotal moment in the series that hints at many things to come. Namely, for the first time, Peter was able to use a power acquired from someone else, without being in the vicinity of the person.
So how did it happen? As we saw in the show last night, Mr. Invisible threw Peter off of the roof of The Artist’s building, thinking that it would force Peter to fly. Instead, something more spectacular happened ... Peter crashed into the roof of a taxi. Peter explained his miraculous survival as having thought of The Cheerleader just before he landed, but I think there was more to it.

Friday Night Lights to Replace Studio 60 on October 30th

Ruh-roh. This decision sounds like a bad sign for Studio 60—for one night only, Friday Night Lights will replace the Aaron Sorkin lovefest. NBC is trying to switch things up, and may just be trying to decide which one of these ratings stinkers will get the boot. On October 30th, during the 10 p.m. slot that Studio 60 normally fills, the football drama will get a shot at seeing whether it sinks or swims. Friday Night Lights will air following Heroes, NBC’s most successful freshman show. The new episode of Lights will air on October 30th, with a repeat of the episode in its usual 8 p.m. Tuesday time slot on October 31st. Studio 60 will take the week off—and for you Studio 60 fans, let’s hope it’s not more than a week. The much-hyped behind-the-scenes look at sketch comedy has steadily dropped viewers, now dipping below 9 million. People have a lot of complaints about the series, and I’m beginning to wonder if it will make it at all.
Friday Night Lights also seemed to be in danger of cancellation, but NBC ordered more scripts and now has the night switcheroo plan in place. The series has only averaged 6.6 million viewers.

Garbage Disposal Seen in a Bad Light on NBC’s Heroes

When product placement goes wrong. That’s the issue that garbage disposal maker In-Sink-Erator has with NBC. In-Sink-Erator claims that an episode of Heroes did an injustice to their product. More specifically, in the pilot, the high school cheerleader (played by Hayden Panettiere) puts her hand into said In-Sink-Erator to mangle her fingers. While she has the ability to heal immediately following an injury, the disposal makers claims that the scene “casts the disposer in an unsavory light, irreparably tarnishing the product.” The scene showed a serious injury that resulted from someone putting their hand in the garbage disposal. The company also cried foul about the use of the In-Sink-Erator name, saying “It’s a trademark thing.” No comment yet from NBC, but the garbage disposal company is asking that any future broadcasts of that episode be barred. Currently, it can be seen on NBC’s website.

NBC Plans to Stream New Fall Shows, Offer Blogs

In a press release from NBC today, they announced that NBC.com will stream episodes of their new fall shows for free—Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Kidnapped, 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights and Heroes—following the original airing of the episodes. NBC.com is also going to offer blogs written by a variety of shows’ creators, producers or cast members. The blogs will be online for every show on the air, with an additional live blog immediately after the premiere episode.
Jeff Gaspin, President, NBC Universal Cable Entertainment, Digital Content and Cross-Network Strategy said of the news, “When you launch a new season, it’s important that you get the shows in front of as many eyeballs as possible. We’ve created a variety of new, engaging digital offerings to generate excitement and drive viewership to the network.”
